One of our Junior Doctors, Matt is currently working at the hospital as a teaching fellow. Matt is a very keen photographer and prior to the pandemic, had been working at the St Theresa Hospital at Nzara in South Sudan. A charity photographic commission there has been put on hold as a result of the pandemic and so Matt has decided to use his skills to photograph the Critical Care team at James Cook whilst they worked within their ‘hidden world’.
He’s done a great job - the pictures, taken last month within the COVID Intensive Care Units give a glimpse of what it has been like to work in the ICU during the pandemic.
As an introduction, there is a rather nice slideshow featuring the best pictures here - https://www.careinacrisis.org/About-the-Project
The rest of Matt’s photos can be viewed at https://www.careinacrisis.org/
Wow the slideshow was very moving, really brought home the conditions you were all working in and still are with the PPE. The physical effort to keep going wearing it!! The team bonds shine through. So good to have them and hopefully one day the only reminders of such an awful time. Thanks Richard too for keeping us informed in such a unique way its been comforting.

Moving pictures how lucky are we to have you all, simple in awe of all you do 👏
@ms_spanton Hi. Yes, we have seen quite a few cases like that. We were hoping to detect more antibodies from people who were asymptomatic. Immunity is clearly complicated and gets more complicated when you start to measure the amount of antibodies in those who have them. Some research trials have been doing this and some people have very low levels of antibodies whilst others have large amounts (they want these people to take part in therapeutic plasma trials). What this means for individuals long-term immunity is unclear. I wish things were simpler! Cheers, Richard
My husband tested positive for covid, but had it mild. Literally temp of 37.6 for one day. (Tested as a healthcare prof). Just had his antibody test 3 months later and has also tested positive. 1 example so totally anecdotal. But mild case and still detectable antibodies.
Extremely powerful photos. I found them therapeutic to look at. I’m sure these will be treasured by staff, patients and their families; for they depict the efforts, energy, strength hope and care in the ICU throughout.
